Join us for Maine Homeschool Field Trips New England Aquarium Exploration Trip!
We will be catching the 8 am morning Amtrak Downeaster out of Portland Maine and traveling down to Boston where we will be free to explore the New England Aquarium and the surrounding areas- including Quincy Market and Fanueil Hall. We will return to Portland on the 6:15 pm train. Included in this trip are roundtrip Downeaster tickets from/to Portland, Aquarium entrance fee, 2 oneway MBTA subway rides, and one IMAX show | TBA.
- No driving or parking in Boston!
- Travel with friends!
- Have a snack and catch a nap!
- Plenty of space to get up and move around!
TRANSPORTATION: This trip includes transportation from Portland Amtrak ($5 parking fee not included) to the Boston North station of Amtrak and 2 oneway trips on the MBTA subway. Late arrivals will not be permitted on a later train, without full fare. Please arrive on-time.
MBTA SUBWAY: From Boston North station we will catch the GREEN Line subway and travel for 5 minutes to the Government Center Station exit (2 stops). From the Government Center Station, we will board the BLUE Line Subway and travel for 4 minutes to the Aquarium (2 stops). Quincy Market (Faneuil Hall Marketplace) is across the street from the Aquarium Station. The New England Aquarium is half a block away- to the left and behind of the Aquarium Station exit.
ARRIVAL NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM: We will be meeting out in front of the New England Aquarium at 11:30 am to be admitted as a group. We will explore the aquarium on our own, see an IMAX show together at 4 pm and meet back at North Station at 5:30 pm for early boarding and to catch the 6:15 pm train departure back to Maine. Again, please be on-time. Late arrivals will not be permitted on a later train without full fare.
Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, and the adjacent Columbus Waterfront Park are a short 5-minute walk (about a block) from the Aquarium. Feel free to explore both at your leisure. Our family enjoys getting our dinner at Quincy Market and heading for the train at the end of the day.
COLUMBUS WATERFRONT PARK: This large park, which includes a delightful playground, has plenty of climbing activities to challenge your child, including the crow’s nest. (This may be a tempting activity, but stay clear of this with a young toddler who will not be able to make it back down!) There is plenty of room for the kids to run around and burn off some energy.
FANEUIL HALL: For 275 years, Faneuil Hall remains a site of meetings, protests, and debate right up to this very day. Free and open to all, the National Park Service maintains a rich educational presence here. Please take time to visit and get your children started in the Junior Park Ranger program!
QUINCEY MARKET, NORTH MARKET, and SOUTH MARKET: Fabulous places to eat and shotp all set around a cobblestone promenade where jugglers, magicians and musicians entertain the passers-by. So by all means, stroll, shop, eat, laugh, wander, wonder and explore it all.
- Please check out train tickets from the north and south. You can always purchase your own tickets farther up or down the line. For example, it is very reasonable to take the train from Brunswick to Portland and join the group there.
